VMware Mirage for Retail presentation (VMUG Hungary Q2)

Tuday was (27/06/17) VMUG Hungary meeting at IMAX Cinema City (Arena mall).

You can find the Agende on this link: https://community.vmug.com/events/event-description?CalendarEventKey=99b2e03f-7e3a-435a-b16a-632235d77676&CommunityKey=da657737-6fc8-44e4-a785-4678c6c4a1b6&Home=%2fcommunities%2flocalcommunityhome ( I know it is long 🙂 )

First presenter was Filip Verloy and he talked about Rubrik. It is a new approach in backups. Two weeks ago i was part of an other presentation about Rubrik backup appliance by Rutger Kosters. He showed us lots of interesting things, and some new feature from latest version of Rubrik. I think it is good idea and we schould follow the new enhancements.

After it came presentation of NetApp about HCI solutions. In one appliance the Customers can choose between storage node and compute noode. Details here. Essence: the compute and storage can scale differently.

Coffe break!

Valentin explaned the new releases from VMware product especially vRealize Operation Manager 6.6, and showed the startegic ways. He talked about VMware support levels, what is the main different among support subscriptions.

I was the next at before lunch. I talked about VMware Mirage introduction at my company.

You can see my presentation in below.

Unfortunately I had to go, so I didn’t see the other’s presentation. I hope András Herceg (vThing) will mention them in his blog.

VMware Horizon Mirage 5.9 update and WebConsole install

As I mentioned in my previously article, we have introduced VMware Horizon Mirage. I would like to share our upgrade process, particularly one moment.

The upgrade process is very simple. You can follow this document:

First of all you can upgrade your Mirage management server or servers then upgrade your Mirage servers. When you want to connect to Mirage Console after upgrade (only mirage management server updated) it wont be work, becouse you have to upgrade mirage servers to. In the console, under System Configuration / Servers tree you will see configuration mismatch error message.

Check the points in secund step in VMware documentation, and the upgrade process is done! 🙂

Let’s go install a new web interface to our new Mirage server. It was part of our plan, but before we had been installed the web console we upgraded our servers to new versions.

We decided to install Web Management solution on Mirage Management servers. I didn’t find any recommendation why can’t do this.

Install IIS server

Install Web Management server

When we tried to install msi file, we got an error message: “VMware mirage web applications setup wizard ended prematurely”

Fortunately we found a VMware Community discouss about this problem, and it solved the problem.

The solution:

  • Log into the server (our case Mirage Management server) by Mirage Service Account
  • Run a Command promt by Administrator
  • msiexec.exe /i “c:\tmp\mirage.WebManagement.x64.161934.msi” /L* “C:\TMP\mirageinstall.log”

The Web Management installed fine! 🙂

Desktop full restore by VMware Horizon Mirage

I’m part of a project where we can solve approximately 200 dekstop (PC base POS) security updates. This PCs are connecting to our company HQ by VPN over 3G connection. This is a limited size usage solution, so we have only x GB traffic in one month for whole environment. If we overuse this we will pay for our provider.

It was the main reason why we have started install the VMware Mirage system to try it.

Mirage can:

  • Split Base layer from App layer
  • Compress network traffic
  • In case of network problem
  • In case of network problem, continuous U/D traffic from position of problem
  • Easy restore to earlier snaphot / state

We tried the latest case in our POC system. The original conception was that: we remove a Windows security update manually from PC, and Mirage should have restored it to previously status.

We uninstalled the update, restarted the PC, and we couldn’t believe our eyes. Windows crashed!

Hungarian Windows 🙂

Ok, don’t panic, it should have been a real situation. Let’s look what we can do in this situation?!

We find this article on VMware Documentation Site:

Follow steps in the article that you can create a bootable USB pendrive wich consist of VMware Mirage Agent.

It was our command under test:

C:\BootUSB>win7usb.cmd F:\ C:\BootUSB\MirageClient\MirageClient.x64.138892.msi false 1 C:\BootUSB\Drivers

(You will find this “win7usb.cmd” in Mirage install zip file)

When you have connection between PC and Mirage server, the server will recognize the PC.

Right click and select restore option, and follow the wizard.

On the PC’s sceen you will see similar this.

That’s it, your PC/POS was restored, and it was only 45 min in our test environment! 🙂

VMware vRealize Webcast guest presenter II

Yesterday I (@kisstib0r) was part of a VMware Webcast about Proactive Operation by vRealize Operation and LogInsight with @czuczumanov. We have introduced vRealize Suite at my company and the first step of this project was vRealize Operation Manager deploy.

I would have liked share my opinion and experience about this product and task. In this webcast I spoke short time about that fortunetly I will spekaer at VMUG Hungary at Marc. I don’t know the exact time. If I know that I will share with you.

So the point: You can see this presentation on demand click here. (in Hungary)

I hope you will enjoy it 🙂

Migrate from Windows base vCenter PSC to VCA PSC

I tried how can migrate from windows base vCenter to linux base VCA server. In this post I would like to share my experience.

Fortunatlely the migration process reconize our vCenter environement, and it is able to determinate wich type of vCenter (PSC or not) want we migrate.

First of all we can runing VMware Migration Assistant on source vCenter server. You can find this app on vCenter install media.

This console base app will check our server is meet the requiments of migration. Eg.: in my lab environment i didn’t use gateway, becouse i used same subnet for all servers. This tool notice me, this is an error!

When everithing was fine, you will see “Waiting for migration to start…” message end of lines.

Next step we can runing vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 Installer, and click to “Migrate” option.

Follow the install’s instructions, fill the gaps.

Add ESXi host’s IP address where have you been install the vCenter Server Appliance, and add root user’s password.

Fill the temporary IP datas. Until the migration process the temp. IP address will be change.

Summary page.

When U clicked to Finish button the installer will deploy a new PSC server.

After the installation process, click “Continou” button to migration process let started.

Migration stage 2 will be started.

When your server was part of MS Active Directory domain, you can join your Appliance to domain during installation process.

Why not? 🙂 Join the VMware’s Customer Experince Imp. Program.

The migration summary tab. You have to click to I have backed up my source server option, despite the process can’t start.

YES! Your source server will be shut down, becouse two ip address in one network don’t exist!

Done! Your vCenter Server was migrate to VCA!
